You just have to wait them out. After a while the compatibles begin to show up with the cheaper prices. Take the Brother LC51 cartridges, you can buy a whole set now for about $7.00.

Because they got you. Once you've bought the printer, they can charge anything they want for the ink.

While the laser printer's cartridge lasts longer, it costs more. Since the inkjet cartridge costs less, that model is what ended up dominating the market (consumers can be expected to be short-sighted.) Fortunately, the manufacturers' model of charging $30+ for every cartridge didn't pan out; cheaper versions are readily available. I like the Staples "inkdrop" because I can get when I want and only need to have two cartridges, refilling the spare. It's about $15, which is a fair price for the hassle it saves me. And that's really the issue, as it is in everything: time is money; money is time. You spend more of one and you spend less of the other.
For the first, initial, new cartridges, go to CostCo or Sam's Club, where they are your initial brand name but for much less.

I figured out how much I was paying for gasoline on my Jeep and over a period of about 5 years it is more than my Jeep is worth. I got a refill kit to refill my own ink cartriges and it is not easy to do but once I have done a set of cartridges I feel sly... and crooked... like I just robbed a bank or something. I think I bought a refill kit a Costco but I am sure they have them at Walmart, Target, etc.

Well....think economically about "revenue"

If I can produce a printer for $50, I will sell it for $20 because I know people only buy printer once for say 10 years, but they need ink once in couple months.
My printer will look cheap....so people will be more interested in buying it...meanwhile to cover my printer production cost, I will sell the ink on a price in which will cover it, so I can gain as much as revenue as possible.......

$20 for buying printer once in their life, $50 every couple months to make me rich.

That's how manufacturers make there money, the sell the product cheap and when it comes to that time when you need ink they jack the prices up. Kodak has finally turned things around on how they sell there printers now. Instead of Cheap printers and high Ink, the printers now cost more but the ink is much cheaper. In the long run, spending more up front will save you a lot more at the end.

Depending on the cartridge you'll probably be able to refill it. Sometimes it lets you fill it more than twice. Go to Wal-Mart, they have the kit to do this.

This is how printer manufacturers actually make their money - the comsumables. The hardware is priced very attractively and you get zinged on the ink :(
